Our topic this week is Time. Maths homework will be posted on the mathletics website. Please ask your teacher for a paper copy if you need one or if you have trouble logging on.

Please also practise your times tables up to 12 x 12.

-      Literacy (20mins): Persuasive Writing
PERSUASION IS ALL AROUND YOU
We are starting a new writing topic on persuasion.  You might be surprised at how many people and businesses are trying to convince you to do things every day. You only have to watch commercials, read the paper, look at the ads in your magazines, or read the billboards as you’re driving home to see that persuasion is all around you.
Your homework is to find a persuasive piece to bring to or share about in class. It can be an article in the newspaper, a letter to the editor, a movie or book review, a commercial, or an advertisement in a magazine or newspaper. Once you have found your persuasive piece, answer the questions below.
1. Where did you find your persuasive example?
2. Who is trying to persuade you?
3. What are they trying to persuade you to do?
4. How do they try to persuade you?
5. Do you think their argument is convincing? Why or why not?

-      Spellings (20mins) should be practised for a short time each day, using the words given in sentences.

You need to:

 • look at each word

• say the word

• copy the word in first space

• cover the words and try to write it from memory

• check to see if they are right

I found it on a advert on the TV,
A advertiser is trying to persuade me,
They are persuading me to raise money for charity,
They tried to persuade me by saying: Please raise money for the poor people in Kenya (the whole of Africa),
I think that their argument is convincing because the poor people are poor and if the poor people are poor they would be not able to buy food and water so we need to try and help people who are suffering.

  3. I saw my persuasive example from our Christmas play because the stallholders kept on saying [for example]- "baubles baubles and tinsel get your fairy lights here, guarrented to work first time!" The stallholders are trying to persuade us so we can by the baubles & tinsel etc. They are trying to persuade us to buy all the Christmassy stuff. The stallholder is persuading us by saying "baubles & tinsel!" I think their persuasion is very good because they are actually holding all the stuff that the stallholder was talking about.
